Hip and Glute Pain Treatment in Kew, Melbourne

Hip and glute pain can make the simple things hard, like lying on your side, climbing stairs, getting out of the car or going for a walk. Sometimes the pain is on the outside of the hip, sometimes deep in the buttock or groin, and sometimes it's actually coming from the lower back. Working out which one you have is the first step. At our Kew clinic we see people from Kew, Hawthorn East and Balwyn North who want to get moving comfortably again.

Types of Hip and Glute Pain We See

  • Outer hip pain: Pain on the side of the hip, often worse lying on that side, on stairs or after a long walk. Usually linked to the gluteal tendons, and sometimes called hip bursitis.

  • Hip arthritis: Stiffness and aching in the groin or hip, often worse first thing in the morning or after sitting.

  • Groin pain in active people: Pain at the front of the hip with running, kicking, squatting or sitting low, including hip impingement.

  • Buttock pain: A deep ache in the glute, often with sitting, running or climbing hills.

  • Muscle strains: Hip flexor, groin and hamstring strains from sport or a sudden movement.

  • Pain coming from the lower back: Hip or buttock pain that's actually referred from the spine. See our back pain and sciatica pages.

What Causes Hip and Glute Pain?

Your hips carry your body weight with every step, so they're very sensitive to changes in how much you're asking of them. Common contributors include:

  • Changes in load: More walking, running, hills or stairs than your hips are used to.

  • Weak glutes: When the muscles around the hip can't keep up, the tendons and joint take more of the strain.

  • Sitting and sleeping positions: Crossing your legs, sitting low, or lying on one side all night can all compress sore tendons.

  • Hormonal changes: Outer hip pain is especially common in women around menopause.

  • Stiffness in the back or knees: Less movement elsewhere means more work for the hip.

Like the knee, hip scans often show wear and tear in people with no pain. How your hip moves and what sets it off usually tells us more.

How Osteopathy Helps with Hip and Glute Pain

We look at how your hips, lower back, knees and feet are working together, and at what your days and training look like, then build a plan that fits.

Hands-On Treatment

Soft tissue work, joint mobilisation and stretching for the hip, glutes and lower back to ease pain and help you move more freely.

Strength and Rehab

Exercise is the most important part of getting most hips better. You'll get a progressive program to strengthen your glutes and the muscles around the hip, starting gently and building as your pain settles.

Simple Changes That Help

Small things often make a big difference with hip pain, like how you sleep, how you sit and how you build back up to walking, running or stairs. We'll show you what to change and what not to worry about.

Jye Adamson, Osteopath

"A lot of people with outer hip pain have been told to stretch it. Usually it needs the opposite, less compression and more strength."

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Your first appointment is 45 minutes. We'll ask where the pain is, what sets it off and how it's affecting your sleep and activity, then check how your hip, lower back and knee move and how strong your glutes are. You'll leave with a clear explanation, treatment if it's right for you, and exercises you can start straight away.
